Gameplans: Take Control of Your Deck’s Direction

The brew wizard has always tried to figure out what your deck wants to do based on your commander. Teysa Karlov? Probably Aristocrats. Atraxa? Likely +1/+1 counters or Superfriends. And most of the time, that’s right.

But sometimes it’s not.

Sometimes what a commander excels at isn’t written in the text box. Sometimes you want to veer off the beaten path entirely. Build Teysa as a lifegain deck. Take Atraxa in a poison direction. The cards you want are different, and the recommendations should reflect that.

That’s what Gameplans are for.

You Pick the Strategy

When you enter the brew wizard, the first step is now selecting your gameplans. We’ll suggest archetypes based on your commander. These are the ones our system thinks are the best fit. But you’re not locked in. You can pick any archetype we support: Lifegain, Tokens, Aristocrats, Spellslinger, Tribal variants, and more.

Pick one. Pick three. It’s your deck.

Order Matters

Here’s the part that actually matters: the order you set your gameplans determines their priority. Your first gameplan has the strongest influence on recommendations. Your second has less. Your third, less still.

Drag them around until the priority feels right. Building Orzhov tokens with a lifegain subtheme? Put Tokens first, Lifegain second. The recommendations will weight accordingly.

This isn’t just a filter. It’s telling the recommendation engine what you care about most.

How It Fits Together

Gameplans feed directly into the recommendation engine. When you’re browsing synergistic cards, ramp options, or removal, the scores reflect your chosen strategies. Cards that enable or pay off your gameplans rise to the top. Cards that conflict with them drop.

The brew wizard walks you through each category: synergistic cards, ramp, removal, card draw, board wipes, and finally your mana base. At every step, recommendations are shaped by the gameplans you set at the start.

Change your mind halfway through? Go back to the gameplan step, reorder or swap archetypes, and the rest of the wizard adjusts.

A Note on Coverage

This feature is only as strong as our concept graph, i.e. the system that maps cards to archetypes, synergies, and strategies. We’re improving it every day. Some archetypes have deeper coverage than others. Some niche strategies are still being built out.

If you pick a gameplan and the recommendations feel thin, that’s on us to improve. But the foundation is there, and it’s getting better with every update. Use the feedback options to let us know.
