Clone a Deck, Export Any List

You can now clone any published deck on Icarian into a private copy to rework, and the original deck gets credit for it. Every deck also exports as Moxfield-format text or a plain list, so it pastes into whatever app your friends use.

You find a deck you love. Maybe it’s a friend’s, maybe a stranger’s. You want to build it, but not exactly. You’d cut the cards you don’t own, swap in your pet card, push it a little faster. So you start copying it card by card into your own list, or you screenshot it and type it in later. Neither is fun.

Then there’s the other direction. You built a deck on Icarian, and your friend wants to see it in the app they use. Or you want it in Arena. A deck list should go wherever you need it.

Both of those are fixed now.

Clone a deck

Every published deck has a Clone deck button on its banner. One tap gives you your own copy to rework.

The copy brings over the commanders, every card in the deck with its finish (foils stay foil), the cards the owner was still considering, and the gameplans. It doesn’t bring the description or the primer. Those are the original owner’s words, not yours.

Your copy is private until you decide to publish it. The original doesn’t change. From there it’s a normal Icarian deck: brew on it, cut what you don’t like, check it against your collection, buy what’s missing.

Credit where it’s due

This is how most people actually find decks. Copy something good, then make it yours. We wanted that to credit the person who built it.

While the original is published, your copy shows Brewed from with a link to the original deck and its owner. The original shows how many times it’s been cloned. That count only includes clones by other people, so nobody inflates their own number by copying their deck five times.

If you publish decks, this is the number to watch. It’s people taking your idea home.

Export any deck

Published decks also have an Export button. On your own decks it’s in Tools, and it works whether your deck is public or not. Pick one of three:

  • Copy (Moxfield format) keeps every card’s set, collector number and foil. It imports into Moxfield, and back into Icarian.
  • Copy (plain text) is just “1 Sol Ring” lines, which Arena, MTGO and Archidekt accept.
  • Download .txt saves the Moxfield format as a file.

Commanders come first in both. In the Moxfield format, cards still under consideration go in the sideboard, so nothing gets lost.

We tested the round trip on a large set of real decks: export from Icarian, import back in, compare. The first run turned up printings like Secret Lair’s starred collector numbers, which our importer couldn’t read. It reads them now, along with partner, Background and other commander pairs.

Why we built it this way

A deck list is yours. Some sites make it hard to get your list back out, or to share it anywhere but their own pages. We’d rather Icarian be the link you paste because it works everywhere, not because it’s the only place your deck can live.

So export is on every published deck, for everyone, signed in or not. Cloning needs an account, since the copy has to live somewhere.

Find a deck worth stealing, then make it yours. Sign up for Icarian to clone it.
