A Code of Conduct, and People Who Read Every Report

Icarian now has a published Code of Conduct, and you can report comments, decks and primers that break it. A person reads every report, makes one decision for everyone who reported it, and tells you what happened.

Commander is a social format. You’re going to sit across from these people, or people like them, on Thursday night. That’s most of the fun. It’s also why the comment section under a precon upgrade can turn ugly fast, and why so many deck sites quietly give up on comments altogether.

We didn’t want to give up on them. We wanted a few clear rules, a way to flag the things that break them, and a real person on the other end.

The Code of Conduct

The Code of Conduct is short on purpose. The core of it:

  • Every table is welcome. Precons, budget brews, jank, pet decks and cEDH all belong here. Give feedback on the deck, not the person.
  • Be honest about your decks. When you publish a deck or set its bracket, describe it as it really plays.
  • No harassment. No insults, slurs, threats or hateful content. If someone has made clear they don’t want to hear from you, stop.
  • No spam or scams. No link farming, fake trades, or moving payments off-site under false pretenses.
  • Keep private things private. Other people’s personal information, messages and collections aren’t yours to share.

It’s linked from the comment box, from new messages and from the footer, so you never have to go looking for it.

Reporting

If something breaks the rules, report it. Comments have Report comment in their ⋯ menu. Published decks have Report deck under More actions on the deck’s banner, and a deck report covers its name, description and primer. Collectors can be reported from their profile, under More actions. Say what’s wrong in a sentence or two and send it. The person you report isn’t told who you are.

What happens to a report

A moderator reads every report. Not a filter, not a model scanning your chats. A person, checking it against the Code of Conduct.

They make one decision for everyone who reported the same thing:

  • A removed comment stays in its thread as “Removed by a moderator”, so the conversation still makes sense and everyone can see that moderation happened. Its author is told why.
  • A deck or primer that crosses the line gets unpublished. Nothing is deleted. The owner can still edit, brew and play the deck, they just can’t put it back in public until a moderator restores it. If it comes back, its comments and likes come back with it.
  • Serious or repeated problems can get an account disabled, which hides its comments, profile and decks.

And you always hear back. Whether we removed it, unpublished it or left it up, you get a notification saying so. If you think we got a call wrong, tell us through the feedback form.

Your own controls

You don’t need to wait on us. Block someone from your conversation with them, and it works both ways: no messages, no seeing each other’s comments, no reply notifications, and neither of you shows up in the other’s community feed. And if you’d rather your deck didn’t have a comment section at all, turn off Allow comments in the deck’s settings. Existing comments stay, read-only.

All of this is written up in the new Community section of Help, along with how publishing, following, comments, likes, cloning and export work.
