Commander Buzz: Catching What's Hot
If you’ve ever looked at EDHREC rankings and wondered “but what’s actually gaining traction right now?”, we built Commander Buzz for you.
EDHREC is great at telling you which commanders are popular. Thousands of decks, proven strategies, well-documented card choices. But popularity rankings are inherently backward-looking. They tell you what people have built, not what people are excited about building next.
Commander Buzz is different. Instead of counting total decks, we track velocity, i.e. how quickly interest is changing. A commander with 50 decks that’s suddenly getting a lot of attention will show up as trending long before they crack any all-time popularity list.
What We’re Watching
We pull signals from three categories:
Social media interest: We monitor MTG community discussions to see which commanders people are actually talking about. When a new combo gets discovered or a content creator highlights a sleeper commander, we catch that chatter.
Market signals: Price movements tell a story. When a commander’s price starts climbing or players start setting price alerts, that’s a leading indicator of interest. We track both the magnitude and acceleration of these changes.
Platform activity: How users interact with commanders on Icarian itself: deck creation rates, page views, engagement patterns. When people start building, we notice.
These signals combine into a single buzz score. Commanders scoring high enough earn a badge in the commander browser - “Hot” for the most active, “Trending” for those gaining momentum.

Why This Matters
New sets drop constantly. Commander precons introduce new legends every few months. Secret Lair reprints put old commanders back in the spotlight. The format moves fast.
Commander Buzz helps you:
- Catch new commanders early: That legend from last week’s set that’s quietly becoming a thing? You’ll see it trending before the full hype cycle.
- Spot rediscovered gems: Sometimes a new card makes an old commander suddenly viable. Price and social signals catch these moments.
- See what your fellow players are excited about: It’s one thing to read that a commander is “good.” It’s another to see that people are actively building it right now.
The commander browser defaults to sorting by buzz score, so the most active commanders surface first. You can still sort by name or relevance to a specific archetype, but trending gives you a pulse on the format.
Complementary, Not Competitive
This isn’t meant to replace EDHREC or other popularity metrics. Those tools answer “what’s proven?” Commander Buzz answers “what’s emerging?”
Use both. Check EDHREC for established strategies and staple cards. Check Commander Buzz to see what’s gaining steam. A commander that’s trending but not yet popular might be the perfect time to build - before the staples get expensive and the strategies get solved.
Commander Buzz is live now for all users. Head to the commander browser and see what’s hot.
