Price Alerts: Stop Manually Checking Card Prices

November 06, 2025

I want to add Rick, Steadfast Leader to my Winota deck. Problem is, he’s sitting at $50, and I’m not paying that. But if he keeps trending down? I’ll grab him.

So now I’m checking TCGPlayer, Ebay, Manapool every few days, trying to catch the window. It’s tedious. And if he spikes back up while I’m not paying attention, I’ve missed my shot.

This is the problem price alerts solve.

Set It and Forget It

Pick any card, set a target price, and Icarian will notify you when it gets there. That’s it.

For Rick, I set an alert for $35. If he drops to that price, I get an email and an in-app notification. I don’t have to remember to check. I don’t have to maintain a mental list of cards I’m watching. The system handles it.

You can set alerts in two ways:

Target price alerts work exactly how you’d expect. “Tell me when this card hits $20.” You choose whether you want to know when it goes above, below, or either direction.

Percentage change alerts catch momentum. “Tell me if this card moves 15% in either direction.” Useful for cards you own that might be spiking, or buyout targets you want to catch early. You can track changes from when you created the alert or from the previous day’s price.

Notifications That Actually Reach You

When an alert triggers, you get notified two ways:

  1. In-app notifications — the bell icon in the header shows your unread count. Click through to see what triggered and jump straight to the card.

  2. Email alerts — for time-sensitive stuff, you probably want this. Alerts batch together so you’re not getting spammed if multiple cards move at once.

Both are enabled by default. Turn either off per-alert if you want.

The Weekly Digest (For the Rest of Us)

Here’s the thing: most Magic players aren’t refreshing r/mtgfinance daily. They just want to know if something interesting happened to their collection.

The weekly digest handles this. Once a week, on whatever day you choose, you get an email summarizing:

  • Any alerts that triggered
  • The biggest gainers in your collection
  • The biggest losers in your collection
  • Price movements on cards you’re watching but don’t own

It’s passive awareness. You’re not actively monitoring the market, but you’re also not completely in the dark. That Reserved List card you forgot you owned? You’ll know if it doubled.

Managing Your Alerts

The Market Watch section shows all your alerts sorted by how close they are to triggering. A card that’s $2 away from your target shows up before one that’s $20 away.

Filter by owned cards, wanted cards, active, paused, or recently triggered. Pause alerts you want to keep but temporarily silence. Set alerts as recurring (keeps triggering) or one-time (auto-disables after it fires).

You get up to 100 active alerts, which should cover most use cases.

The Point

Manual price checking doesn’t scale. You forget. You miss windows. You waste time.

Set up a few alerts for cards you’re actually waiting on, enable the weekly digest, and let the system tell you when something matters.

I’ll know when Rick hits $35. And I won’t have to think about it until then.
