Organizing Binders

Binders in Icarian help you organize your collection to mirror your physical card storage.

What Are Binders?

Binders are virtual containers that represent how you physically store your Magic cards. You might have:

  • Three-ring binders for valuable cards
  • Trade binders for cards you’re willing to trade
  • Deck boxes for cards used in specific decks
  • Long boxes for bulk storage

The Binders Shelf

Binders shows every binder on a shelf, drawn as the real thing in its own color. Across the top are three totals: the cards in all your binders, the value they hold, and how many of your set binders are complete.

Each binder’s cover shows:

  • Its best card in a clear window on the front (see Choosing a Cover)
  • The set symbol and how complete it is, for a binder that holds one set
  • A gold “For trade” tag, for a trade binder
  • A card box, with a lid and no rings, for a binder with no page layout (Box)

Under the cover are its name, how many cards it holds and what they’re worth, and its layout (for example “Base set · 3×3 · 15 pages”).

Tap a cover to open the binder: a binder with a page layout opens its pages; a box opens card search showing its cards. The ⋯ button under a cover has Edit, Change cover, See cards in search and Delete.

Creating a Binder

To create a new binder:

  1. Navigate to Binders from the main menu
  2. Click New binder
  3. Enter a name (e.g., “Binder 1”, “Trade Binder”, “Reserved List”)
  4. Optionally turn on Trade binder to mark all cards as tradeable
  5. Pick a Color, a Set if the binder holds one set, and its Pages (3×3, 3×4, 4×3, 4×4, or Box for a card box)
  6. Click Create binder

The cover beside the form redraws as you choose, so you can see the binder before you save it.

Choosing a Cover

The window on a binder’s cover shows its most valuable card that has a picture. To show a different card:

  1. Open the binder’s ⋯ menu on the shelf, or its edit page, and choose Change cover
  2. Click any card. Only cards in that binder are listed
  3. The cover changes straight away; close the window when you’re done

Choose Your most valuable card to go back to the automatic cover. If the card you picked leaves the binder, the cover goes back to the most valuable card until it returns.

A Set Binder’s Pages

Opening a set binder with a page layout shows it as the real binder. At the top is its cover card’s art, with Edit in the corner, and a panel with the set symbol, the binder’s name, its layout and color, a progress bar and five numbers:

  • Collected: how many of the set’s cards you have, out of the set’s size
  • Complete: the same as a whole percent. At 100 the panel shows the Complete tag
  • Pages needed: how many plastic pages to buy (each holds two page sides)
  • In binder: what every card in the binder is worth, foil copies at foil prices, cards from other sets included
  • To finish: what the missing cards would cost. Cards with no price yet are left out and counted instead (“· 3 unpriced”); when none of the missing cards has a price it reads “—”

Below the panel, the open binder sits in its own color (Black if you haven’t chosen one) with rings down the middle; on phones the two pages are stacked. Each pocket shows:

  • A card you have in full color, shining if it’s foil or etched
  • A missing card grayed out, with its name and a white price tag
  • A card reserved by a built deck with a strip naming the deck; tap the strip to open the deck
  • A gap in the set’s collector numbers as its number, and pockets past the end of the set as empty pockets

Tap a card to see its details. Turn pages with Previous and Next, or the left and right arrow keys. If the set has extras, Base set and Master set switch between them and keep you on the same pages.

Jumping to a page

Under the binder, All pages has a little thumbnail of every pair of pages. Darker pockets are cards you have, so you can see which pages are fullest. Tap a thumbnail to flip straight there; the row scrolls sideways when the set is large.

Missing only

Press Missing only to fade the cards you have, so the missing ones stand out in full color with their prices. The pages and their order don’t change, and it stays on as you turn pages. Press it again to turn it off; it also turns off when you reload the page.

Pages of a Binder With No Set

A binder with no set (a trade binder, “Commander staples”) and a page layout opens the same way, laying out its own cards: one card per pocket, so two copies take two pockets, in order of the set’s release date, then collector number, then name, with no gaps. The last page’s remaining pockets are empty. The panel shows three numbers: Cards, In binder and Pages needed. There’s no completion, no Base set / Master set and no Missing only, since nothing is missing.

Assigning Cards to Binders

There are several ways to assign cards to binders:

From the Card Detail Page

  1. Navigate to a card’s detail page
  2. Click Assign to Binder
  3. Select the target binder from the dropdown
  4. Click Confirm

Bulk Assignment from Binder Page

  1. Go to a binder’s page
  2. Click Add Cards
  3. Search for cards to add
  4. Select multiple cards and click Add Selected

Bulk Assignment of Entire Sets

  1. Navigate to a binder’s page
  2. Click Add Set
  3. Select the set you want to add
  4. Icarian will add all cards from that set that are in your collection

Note: When adding cards to a binder, Icarian automatically selects the best-condition copy if you own multiple.

Import a Binder From a CSV

Keep a binder in Moxfield or another app? Export that binder as a CSV and bring it in:

  1. On your binder’s cover, or in its ⋯ menu on the Binders shelf, click Import CSV
  2. Choose the app it came from and the file. The binder is already picked.
  3. Choose what happens to cards you already own:
    • Move them into the binder (the default) moves the copies you own into this binder and adds nothing to your collection. Loose copies go first, then copies from your other binders. Copies a built deck has reserved are used only when there’s no other copy, and they stay reserved.
    • Move them, and add what’s missing moves the copies you own, then adds the rest to your collection in this binder.
    • Add every card as new copies adds every card in the file to your collection, in this binder.
  4. Click Start import

Each row matches the same printing and finish (foil, etched or neither). Copies already in the binder count, so importing the same file twice changes nothing. Cards you don’t own are listed on the import’s report, with why; Download not moved gives you them as a CSV. Nothing is ever taken out of the binder.

Trade Binders

Trade binders have special functionality:

  • All cards in a trade binder are automatically marked as tradeable
  • When you remove a card from a trade binder, it’s no longer tradeable (unless manually marked)
  • Trade binders help you quickly identify which cards are available for trading
  • You can filter searches to show only tradeable cards

Creating a Trade Binder

  1. Create a new binder
  2. Check the Trade Binder checkbox
  3. Add cards you’re willing to trade

All cards will automatically show the “Tradeable” badge!

Viewing Binder Contents

On a binder’s page, you can:

  • See all cards currently in the binder
  • View total binder value (sum of all card prices)
  • Sort cards by name, set, or price
  • Filter by card type, color, or rarity
  • Remove cards individually or in bulk

Moving Cards Between Binders

To move a card from one binder to another:

  1. Go to the source binder’s page
  2. Find the card you want to move
  3. Click Move to Binder
  4. Select the destination binder
  5. Click Confirm

The card will be removed from the source binder and added to the destination binder.

Deleting Binders

To delete a binder:

  1. On the shelf, open the binder’s ⋯ menu and choose Delete (or click Delete binder on its edit page)
  2. Read what happens, then click Delete binder

Important: Deleting a binder does NOT remove cards from your collection. Its cards stay in your collection, in no binder, and can be put in other binders later. Its color, set and page layout are lost, and this can’t be undone.

Best Practices

  1. Name binders clearly - Use descriptive names like “Modern Staples” or “Cube Cards” rather than “Binder 1”
  2. Mirror physical storage - Create virtual binders that match your actual binders for easy lookup
  3. Use trade binders - Keep a dedicated trade binder to quickly see what’s available for trading
  4. Organize by value - Consider separate binders for high-value cards vs. bulk
  5. Regular maintenance - Review binder contents periodically and reorganize as needed
