Tracking Set Completion
Track your progress toward completing specific Magic: The Gathering sets with Icarian’s set targeting feature.
What Is Set Targeting?
Set targeting allows you to:
- Mark sets you’re actively collecting
- See completion percentage for each targeted set
- Identify which cards you’re still missing
- Track total value of owned vs. missing cards
- Monitor your collecting progress over time
Targeting a Set
To target a set for tracking:
- Navigate to All Sets from the Library menu
- Find the set you want to track
- Click the star icon next to the set name
- The set is now targeted and will appear on your Collection dashboard
You can target as many sets as you want!
Viewing Your Progress
Once you’ve targeted sets, you can view your progress:
On the Collection Dashboard
- Navigate to Collection from the main menu
- Scroll to the Targeted Sets section
- See all targeted sets with completion percentages
- View owned count vs. total cards in set
- See total value of owned and missing cards
On the Set Detail Page
- Click on any targeted set from your Collection page
- View the complete card list with owned cards highlighted
- Filter to show only missing cards
- Sort by price to identify high-value cards you’re missing
- Add missing cards directly from this view
Understanding Completion Percentage
The completion percentage is calculated as:
(Cards you own / Total cards in set) × 100
Note: Some special variants (like showcase frames or extended art) may be counted separately depending on the set structure.
Filtering by Missing Cards
To see only cards you’re missing from a targeted set:
- Navigate to the set’s detail page
- Use the Ownership filter
- Select Not Owned
- View only the cards you need to complete the set
This is useful for creating shopping lists or trade requests!
Removing Set Targets
To stop tracking a set:
- Navigate to All Sets
- Find the set you want to remove
- Click the star icon again to untarget it
- The set will no longer appear on your Collection dashboard
Note: Untargeting a set doesn’t remove owned cards from your collection.
Set Completion Strategies
Budget Completion
- Target the set
- Filter by missing cards
- Sort by price (low to high)
- Buy the cheapest cards first to boost completion percentage
- Save high-value cards for last
Value-First Completion
- Sort missing cards by price (high to low)
- Acquire expensive cards first while they’re available
- Fill in cheaper cards later
- Set price alerts for high-value missing cards
Trading for Completion
- Mark your duplicate cards as tradeable
- Create a trade binder with excess cards
- Use the missing cards list to identify trades
- Trade duplicates for cards you’re missing
Example: If you own “Lightning Bolt” from any set, it counts toward completion for ALL sets containing Lightning Bolt.
Set Types to Consider Targeting
- Core Sets - Great for beginners, often have valuable reprints
- Expansion Sets - Standard-legal sets with new cards
- Masters Sets - High-value reprints, good investment targets
- Commander Precons - Complete these by adding singles you’re missing
- Special Sets - Secret Lair, From the Vault, etc.
Common Questions
“Why isn’t my completion percentage updating?”
- Ensure the card you added is from the targeted set
- If you added a different printing, it might not count
- Refresh the page to see updated statistics
“Can I target historical sets I’ll never complete?”
Yes! You can target any set for tracking, even reserved list sets or out-of-print rarities. It’s a great way to see what you have and what you’re missing.
“Does targeting affect my collection or deck building?”
No, targeting is purely for tracking progress. It doesn’t affect deck building, trading, or any other feature.
