Getting Started with Icarian

Welcome to Icarian, your comprehensive Magic: The Gathering collection management application! This guide will help you get started with tracking your cards, building decks, and managing your collection.

What is Icarian?

Icarian is a web-based tool designed to help Magic: The Gathering players:

  • Track your collection - Keep an inventory of all your Magic cards
  • Organize cards - Use virtual binders to mirror your physical storage
  • Build decks - Create and manage Commander decks with format validation
  • Monitor prices - Track card values and set price alerts
  • Complete sets - See your progress toward completing specific sets
  • Discover cards - Browse curated lists like Reserved List, Power 9, and more

Understanding Card Data

Icarian uses trusted data sources to provide accurate card information:

  • MTG JSON - Complete card catalog with all printings, legalities, and metadata
  • Scryfall - High-quality card images and set icons
  • TCGPlayer & CardKingdom - Daily price updates for market values

All card data is automatically updated daily, so you always have the latest information.

Your First Steps

1. Adding Cards to Your Collection

There are several ways to add cards to your collection:

  • Individual cards - Search for a card and click “Add to Collection”
  • Browse sets - View complete set lists and add cards you own
  • Import from Moxfield - Upload a CSV export of your existing collection

2. Organizing with Binders

Binders in Icarian mirror your physical card storage:

  • Create binders (e.g., “Binder 1”, “Trade Binder”, “Cube”)
  • Assign cards to specific binders
  • Mark binders as “trade binders” to automatically flag all cards as tradeable
  • View binder contents and total value

3. Tracking Set Completion

Target sets you’re actively collecting to see your progress:

  • Click the star icon next to any set to target it
  • View completion percentage on the Collection page
  • See which cards you’re missing from targeted sets
  • Track total value of owned vs. missing cards

4. Building Commander Decks

Icarian includes a full-featured Commander deck builder:

  • Create decks with up to 2 commanders (partner support)
  • Real-time format validation (100 cards, color identity, singleton)
  • Track deck value and owned/missing cards
  • Test hands with goldfish mode
  • Share public deck lists

5. Setting Up Price Alerts

Never miss a price change with the watchlist feature:

  • Set target price alerts (“notify when below $5”)
  • Set percentage change alerts (“notify when price drops 20%”)
  • In-app notifications when alerts trigger
  • Track cards you want to buy or sell

Library Dropdown

  • All Sets - Browse all Magic sets
  • All Cards - Search the complete card database
  • Card Lists - Explore curated lists (Reserved List, Elder Dragons, etc.)

Mobile Navigation

On mobile devices, tap the hamburger menu (☰) in the top left to access all navigation options. The interface is optimized for phone screens with easy-to-tap buttons and streamlined views.

Tips for Success

  1. Import your collection - Save time by importing from Moxfield rather than adding cards one by one
  2. Use trade binders - Create a “Trade Binder” and mark it as a trade binder to automatically track tradeable cards
  3. Target sets strategically - Only target sets you’re actively collecting to keep your dashboard focused
  4. Set price alerts wisely - You can have up to 100 active alerts, so prioritize high-value cards or cards you’re actively seeking
  5. Goldfish your decks - Use goldfish mode to test your deck’s mana curve and consistency
